When you sweat you are losing water, but also an assortment of salts. These salts, or electrolytes, are what enable your body to absorb water. If you do not replace them as you sweat, eventually your body will be unable to rehydrate itself regardless of how much water you drink. Recovery drinks are similar, but tend to contain more electrolytes and a small amount of protein. Recovery drinks should not be consumed will working out because they are heavier and may upset your stomach during activity.
